Purpose:
From completely synthetic worlds filled with animated characters, to breath-taking visual effects indistinguishable from live action footage, animated computer graphics have reshaped the modern motion picture. Movie production is the making of illusions, and CG technology now provides much of the magic that creates those illusions. In CG animation and visual effects production, the goal is to bring a creative vision to the screen through any means necessary. The emphasis is on getting the final image to "look right". No extra points are awarded for purist approaches, so the final footage is often a combination of images rendered from 3D models, images painted in 2D, and photographic live-action images with digital manipulation.
This special issue aims to document some of the graphics tools and techniques that are important in motion picture production today. We are seeking original, unpublished papers on any of the following topics:
· Production pipelines: how various commercial and home-grown software packages are used together to produce finished footage.
· Software architectures for major movie production tools such as animation, effects, editing, rendering or image compositing programs.
· Artist-friendly user interfaces and algorithms that can be directed and controlled by artists in natural ways to realize their creative vision..
· Experience/Advice: "Cookbook" surveys by experienced practitioners, on the best ways to achieve important effects. When should you use technique A and when is technique B better? Which techniques work in practice and which ones don't?
· Tricks, hacks, and clever shortcuts: ways to get stellar results at down-to-earth prices. Inexpensive ways to give the illusion that you have solved intractable problems. How necessity proved to be the mother of invention in creating a clever, cheap solution during a production emergency.
· Original Techniques and Algorithms for animation production problems.
As always, jgt papers should describe practical tools and techniques that readers can directly apply to their own problems.

Submission Guidelines:
Authors should strive to write clearly, simply, and concisely, and aim to make their papers interesting and useful to people who make production tools and people who use them. We welcome short papers (about 4 pages) that describe a simple but valuable technique, and longer papers (8 pages or more) that discuss a complex system or compare a group of related techniques. The text should be in 10pt Times Roman, one column format. The content should occupy an 4.4x6.5 in (11.3x16.6cm) area on each page. While jgt has no explicit maximum paper length, we recommend keeping below 15 pages, as papers longer than this are generally less likely to meet the requirements of simplicity and clarity.
All submissions should include a one- or two-paragraph abstract. Papers should be submitted in electronic form as PDF file. Static images and illustrations should be included as part of a manuscript. We do not accept videotapes, but URLs for supplementary images, animations, demonstrations, etc. are welcome and will be considered along with the submitted document.
Submissions should be sent in electronic form by e-mail to the editors. The e-mail must include the names and affiliations of all authors, and full contact information for at least one author. Only PDF-files will be accepted for the initial review process. Please note that for the final printing process only LaTeX or Word files can be accepted.
All submissions will be refereed by the editors with the help of external reviewers according to the criteria of clarity and utility discussed in the call for papers and codified in the referee's review form of jgt. Submitted papers should describe original work that has not appeared in any other peer-reviewed publication. Papers may not be submitted elsewhere while under review by jgt.

About jgt:
The journal of graphics tools is a quarterly journal whose primary mission is to provide the computer graphics research, development, and production community with practical ideas and techniques that solve real problems. We aim to bridge the gap between new research ideas and their use as tools by the computer graphics professional.
There are several other journals in computer graphics which together provide a good forum for introducing new and seminal research. However, rarely can the ideas described in these journals be applied in practice without a great deal of experimentation and experience.
jgt provides a forum for the presentation of the useful techniques that emerge as new research ideas mature. In addition, we provide a forum for novel ideas and elegant research results that are perhaps too "small" for the heavyweight research journals, but that are nonetheless of significant use to practitioners.
